OVERVIEW

The Crossroad Volunteer Internship Program has now been running for six months. After a long period of applications and interviews, we are so excited to have begun expanding out program to include Rotation Class β at Crossroad Health Center (CRHC). Rotation Class β was oriented by CRHC Clinical Coordinator, Kyle Vath, during May and worked its first shift during the week of May 20. New and retuning interns began the Summer 2013 Rotation with a two week shadowing period. As time progresses and experiences are gained, Rotation Class α and Rotation Class β members are working to complete inbox tasks, follow-up on referrals, sign up qualified patients for Medicaid Family Planning, and accomplish various other tasks. Rotation Class α members have been paired with Rotation Class β members to help mentor and guide them through their first rotation in the program.

Rotation Class α ran the first all-program retreat on June 20. Interns were introduced to the new executive board, were briefed on clinical tasks, and began developing a mission statement, guiding principles and goals for the program. The interns also discussed their desire to have a permanent and long lasting effect on patient care at CRHC via the implementation of a capstone project related to the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study. As a whole, the interns are excited to be a part of CRHC and grateful for all the opportunities that are available.

REFLECTIONS

"Overall, we saw 6 children in the time I shadowed Brook Gumm. It was interesting to see the great contrasts and differences between certain patients. While some parents seemed a little more distanced and less proactive in making sure their children lived a healthier lifestyle, other parents were very involved with their children and the physician in making sure they were eating healthy, being active and doing very well in school."

                                                                                                                                                                   - Lauren

"It was eye-opening to see that even with access, education of the patients is incredibly important.

                                                                                                                                                                    - Justin

"I spent the majority of my shift translating for a diabetic patient who was in to see Dr. Rahner and Kathleen... I love translating. It was a pleasure, even if I struggled with the numbers at times."

                                                                                                                                                                    - Julia

"I spent approximately half my shift shadowing Jordan. She showed me how to greet patients, how to take their vitals, how to order vaccines, how to fill out charts, how to prep patient rooms and she even showed my how to take an EKG! It was great to see what she does on a daily basis and I really gained a sense of appreciation for how much works goes into one patient appointment... Overall, I had a great first experience and am excited at the opportunity to learn from such a wonderful doctor and medical assistants!"

                                                                                                                                                                    - Rachel

"I learned an incredible amount from him [Dr. Roberts] and interacted with some very unique patients."
                                                                                                                                                                    - Michael
