"Growing up in Columbus, I have always loved being in urban areas. I also grew up attending faith-based schools that taught me the importance of service from a young age. Due to this upbringing, I find particular fulfillment in serving urban communities. Attending Miami University, a much more rural setting, I felt that I had lost this sense of service in urban communities. However, after getting involved in an urban service-learning program at Miami, I gained this sense of service back! Being in this program, I learned about Crossroad Health Center for the first time, and I started to feel a stronger connection to the Cincinnati communities I began to serve. Now, I can say that serving at Crossroad has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my undergraduate years.
As a Crossroad VIP, I am directly involved in healthcare access to hundreds of patients. This responsibility alone still amazes me, and I am thankful to be a part of this process that ensures patients get the care they need. Every time one of these patients takes the time to express gratitude for simple appointment reminders and scheduling help feels so rewarding. Through the CVIP program, we get to tackle barriers together with patients, and I hope that even the knowledge that someone is looking out for them might have a positive impact on these patient’s lives.
Through tackling these barriers, I have gained a passion for healthcare delivery to populations made vulnerable by our healthcare system and a motivation to fight for equitable health policy in my future career. With the knowledge I have gained at Crossroad, I hope to continue to learn more about social determinants of health throughout my last year at Miami and in medical school. Along with this, the opportunity to shadow various providers employed at the health center has enhanced my commitment to becoming the physician I want to be one day: one who prioritizes patient-centered care, takes the time to attentively listen to each concern, and has an unwavering commitment to delivering vital healthcare services despite any obstacles. I am inspired by the Crossroad staff every day, and I know I will use the things I have learned as a VIP to make an impact on my future patients one day as well. Overall, Crossroad has positively impacted my career goals, passion for service, and healthcare knowledge, and I am thankful to advocate for patients every day at this amazing health center!"

"Being born and raised in the west side of Cincinnati, I grew up being taught to have immense pride in the people and tradition around me. I never quite knew how important that was to me until later in life.
Growing up, I was privileged and blessed enough to never have to worry about my health or where my next meal came from, later, finding out this was not the case for everyone. Volunteering at a homeless outreach center in high school opened my view of the world and the disparities within it. I quickly learned working with individuals that are underserved, specifically the homeless, was something that would be in my life forever. I learned the one thing you can give people that you cannot physically hand them is human dignity and respect.
Going to UC with the goal to go into medicine, I knew working with people in communities that are underserved was something that I needed to get back into from high school. Crossroad was always on my horizon, and when I finally was able to take part the summer of my 2nd year at UC, it was everything I expected and more!
Previously having experience working with underserved populations and starting to get involved and work in healthcare, crossroads was the best mesh of my two passions. In my time as a VIP, I have started to really see how difficult and confusing it is for people to get the care that they deserve. The process of receiving healthcare can be convoluted and hard to navigate, making equitable access to care for everyone extremely difficult. I take great joy in trying to mitigate this experience for our patients. Hearing the deep gratitude and sigh of relief when patients finally get their appointments scheduled is something that will never get old. My time as a VIP has confirmed even more to me that the path I am in healthcare is right for me. I take the utmost pride in taking care of people and providing equitable healthcare in the communities I grew up in and around".

"I got involved with Crossroad my junior year of college at Miami University. I heard about this opportunity through the premed center on campus and knew I had to take advantage of it. Coming from out of state, I had no idea what Crossroad was or what their work consisted of; I had zero expectations. The only thing I knew was that I would be helping out the local community. Now, after almost two rotations, I can confidently say that this experience has exceeded any expectations that I may have had. It truly has allowed me to adopt several valuable perspectives.I had never had a job where I called anyone, so this was a new experience for me. I have been interested in medicine since the eighth grade, but this was not what I envisioned as medicine. Having said that, this unique opportunity provided me a different lens to what medicine can be. It is not just what you see on TV or just the physician you see for a yearly checkup – there are so many different people working behind the scenes that make everything run smoothly. This position has shown me what that looks like first-hand. We may never get all the praise, but, as VIPs, we are important and make a difference.
Coming into Crossroad each week, it is uncommon for nurses, doctors, and medical assistants to not acknowledge you – it is an extremely welcoming and fun working environment. I believe that this is incredible and reflects on our patients as well. Hearing the gratitude in patients’ voices when extending our assistance is unmatched. I know that this impact we have on patients is worth the two hour round trip each week".

"Working with communities that have been historically underserved was always my plan. Since I can remember, my reason for going into healthcare was to increase access to quality care for people who look like me. After researching, I came across Crossroad Health Center. I wanted to gain more experience working with people from underserved communities. Through research and patient care I had some experience; however, I knew Crossroad would give me a unique opportunity to connect with patients and learn another part of the healthcare world. After reading the mission statement of Crossroad and the goal of the VIP program, I knew immediately I belonged. When I came across Crossroad initially, the VIP application was closed. I remember checking weekly, patiently waiting for the application to open. Once I found out about the VIP program, I encouraged all my friends interested in healthcare to apply. I found out I got accepted into the program and was overjoyed.
During my time at Crossroad, I have worked mainly on referrals but have also been given the opportunity to shadow providers. Shadowing providers allowed me to see day-to-day life, solidifying my interest in healthcare.
Although this is only my second rotation, Crossroad truly feels like home to me. I wish I knew about the program sooner. Crossroad has not only given me the opportunity to live in my purpose but also provide skills that will translate into careers and life. Crossroad has provided many opportunities to build community, connect with people from different backgrounds, face the social determinants of health firsthand, and practice compassion and empathy. I am grateful".

"At Crossroad, interns play a pivotal role in the multidisciplinary team. Responsibilities range from assisting patients to helping schedule referral appointments at outside offices while taking into consideration potential limiting barriers. I also spent some time shadowing healthcare professionals, learning how they conduct patient consultations, develop treatment plans, and monitor progress. This hands-on involvement allowed me to witness the complexities and nuances of patient care in a real-world setting. I further understood the impact of health disparities and social determinants of health on underrepresented patient populations.
The internship has profoundly impacted me, both personally and as an aspiring physician. Working closely with patients who are often at vulnerable points in their lives has deepened my empathy and compassion. It has brought to light the importance of systematic changes in healthcare and increasing the emphasis on patient-centered care. Observing the dedication and empathy of the Crossroads team has solidified my desire to pursue a career in medicine. Their unwavering commitment to improving patients' lives has inspired me to strive for excellence and to be a source of support and guidance for those in need.
I have gained a number of vital skills at Crossroad that will be extremely helpful to me in the medical field in the future. Effective communication is essential; developing my ability to engage with patients and coworkers has improved my capacity for attentive listening and considered response. Moreover, the ability to think critically and problem-solve has been reinforced through observing patient care and participating in case discussions. These experiences have prepared me to approach medical challenges with a strategic and empathetic mindset.
My internship at Crossroad has not only enriched my knowledge and skills but also reinforced my commitment to becoming a compassionate and competent physician. The journey has been an invaluable chapter in my life that I wish to continue, paving the way for my future in healthcare".

"After hearing about the opportunity to become a volunteer for the Crossroad Health Center, I was immediately interested and inspired. I knew that this was something that I would definitely enjoy partaking in. Most importantly, being a VIP has allowed me to grow as an individual and as an aspiring healthcare professional.I truly loved the aspect of being able to serve the community in unique ways. By being a VIP, I have been able to learn many new interpersonal and professional skills. There have been many scenarios where I have had to learn different patient care approaches. The interactions I've had with patients, fellow volunteers, and staff members have enriched my perspective and expanded my empathy. I have been mentored by amazing individuals who share the same passion for healthcare with me. This experience has been very educational not only for my professional experience, but has also taught me different ways of connecting with patients and colleagues. I have learned that there is so much I do not know about the world of healthcare, but being in this clinic has provided me with a new door to experience a non-traditional side of healthcare. The hands-on experience I've gained has been invaluable, allowing me to develop practical skills and deepen my understanding of healthcare delivery. I have also been able to shadow physicians at Crossroads. This aspect of the program has been amazing as I was able to immerse myself further into the world of patient care.
As a member of the Crossroad Health Center, I've had the profound honor of serving individuals from all walks of life. Whether it's through providing healthcare services, advocating for wellness initiatives, or fostering a culture of compassion, every interaction re-emphasizes the importance of service and community. Every day presents an opportunity to make a difference, to offer support, and to be a guiding light for those in need. It's a responsibility I carry with great pride and gratitude".

"I joined Crossroad in the Spring 2024 rotation. I had eyed the program with some interest for several years, and in my junior year, I finally decided to go for it! I'm so glad to be a part of Crossroad and this program, and I look forward to continuing it over the summer and into next year. I've had various clinical and research experiences during my time in college, but the VIP has been very unique and informative. In this day in age, I think most people are aware of the struggle it is to obtain proper healthcare, but few, including myself before joining Crossroad, see this struggle firsthand.
Experiencing how difficult it can be to schedule appointments that we may otherwise take for granted is very eye-opening. Many aspects of this process, from start to finish, I have never honestly thought twice about until now. Seeing how those without access to adequate resources have to navigate the healthcare systems can be a reality check. Calling countless specialists and hospitals, searching for those who would take certain insurance can be a battle in itself, which is then compounded when a patient might need assistance with transportation. Furthermore, the patient may also need a translator or representative with them at this appointment. There are so many layers of depth to the convolution of the healthcare system, which can be made even harder to navigate due to intersectional disadvantages.
I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity that Crossroad has presented to widen my experience and truly appreciate my privilege. Furthermore, the ability to help those who need it most is fulfilling and gratifying and I look forward to my shift every week. I can't wait to take all of this experience and knowledge with me to whatever medical opportunities I pursue next".

Crossroads mission and the role of a CVIP was something that really stood out to me and drew me towards applying for the position. Everyone, no matter their situation, color of skin, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, etc deserves quality healthcare and treatment. Unfortunately, that is not something our healthcare system has achieved quite yet and there is a large gap in access to healthcare. Crossroads helps to close that gap by providing quality healthcare to anyone including those that don’t have insurance.
My time at Crossroad as a VIP has been invaluable. My first rotation was the second semester of my junior year and I learned a lot about referrals and the obstacles some patients face when trying to schedule and transport to their appointments with specialists. I was able to improve my communication skills through calling patients to remind them of their appointments, asking if they’d like help scheduling their referrals and then calling doctor offices and hospitals to get them scheduled, and calling insurance companies to set up transportation service for patients that need help getting to and from their appointments. Through all of those I was also able to learn about the medical side of insurance and also how to chart medical information and use multiple charting systems.
My second rotation consists of the same activities but I have gotten to train new VIPs on everything we do. Being able to train individuals has been rewarding and provided me with better leadership skills that will also help better prepare me for my future career in medicine. Not only do I get the opportunity to help patients but help peers build their confidence in their communication skills, patient interaction skills, charting systems and ability to take on challenging patient cases.
I am very grateful for the opportunity to volunteer as a VIP at Crossroad and I will forever take the skills and insights I have learned here with me wherever I go as it will not only help me be a better future physician but also I believe they have helped me become a better person in our world".

"I first found out about Crossroad through a newsletter, and a friend of mine who was already a Volunteer Intern (VIP) spoke highly of the program. Intrigued by her positive experiences, I reached out to her for more information. She shared how the program not only provided valuable experience but also allowed her to make a real difference in the community. Her enthusiasm encouraged me to apply, and I’m so glad I did.
As a VIP, my main role is to schedule referral appointments for patients. Many individuals in underserved communities struggle with challenges such as transportation issues, language barriers, and lack of insurance. By assisting with the scheduling of appointments and providing information about available resources, we help make healthcare more accessible for these patients. While I had some theoretical knowledge of the challenges faced by underserved communities, talking to patients over the phone brought those challenges to life.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this role is witnessing the positive impact our support has on patients. For many, just knowing that someone is there to help can make a huge difference. My experience at Crossroad has also helped me grow both personally and professionally. Every day presents new challenges, and no two referrals are the same. This unpredictability has taught me to think quickly and adapt to different situations, improving my communication skills along the way.
My time at Crossroad has been an incredible learning
journey. I’ve gained insights into the complexities of the healthcare system,
and I am confident that this knowledge will shape me into a more effective
healthcare provider in the future. I am truly thankful for the opportunity to
be a VIP and look forward to continuing this journey".

"Moving
into my second rotation at Crossroad has been a very impactful experience. As
long as I can remember I have wanted to go into medicine and knew that most of
what I wanted to do was to help people in lower income households and
neighborhoods. All I would ever think is that I’ll do it when I become a
doctor, but how could I start helping now? When I stumbled upon Crossroad, I
had no idea the impact it would have on me or me on it. Although a seemingly
simple and small job, I’ve been able to help so many people from various
backgrounds. Most of the people that come through Crossroad have a hard time
prioritizing their health. They can’t or don’t have time to schedule their
referrals or a follow up with their doctor. This is when we come in, and it
surprised me how thankful people are for something that I think is simply part
of my job.
I recall a patient whom we had been trying to schedule for months, but had been unable to find a translator, but no one gave up on making sure he got the proper care. When we were finally able to schedule them for their appointment, they were endlessly thankful, and it really shows how small actions can have the biggest impact sometimes. There are days when I come in that I’m tired and don’t feel like making calls all the time, but I remember that this job is bigger than me, and the impact I make on people is well worth it even through the exhaustion.
As
I finish my second rotation, and move into my third, I will always be thankful
for all that CVIP has taught me. I hope I continue to learn more as I move
forward".

"My experience with Crossroad Health Center began in my summer leading into my freshman year of college. This experience was sparked by an email that came across my computer from my University of Cincinnati email account titled: "Crossroad Health Center Volunteer Internship Program." This was the first email I received that was not regarding move in dates or class scheduling. I clicked on the email and within seconds I was captivated by the amazing, inspiring description of what it is to be a CVIP as well as the inspiring mission that the Crossroad Health Center organization is currently embarking on and fulfilling. After observing how truly special the Crossroad Health Center organization is and the values it holds, immediately I knew I had to be part of it and replied to the email at the instant asking how I could get involved even though I was not in college yet!
With this desire and ambition to become involved within this wonderful organization, thankfully I was accepted into this amazing program! From the first day of my volunteering experience, I knew I made the right decision and could not wait to begin learning about what it means to be a CVIP and how much of an impact I could make while being a part of this program. From the moment where I made my very first patient interaction, to now where I've likely made hundreds, I can honestly say I have learned a truly inspiring amount, as well as gained brand new perspectives on patient care and how big of an impact anyone working in patient care can make.
One of these perspectives includes how difficult it can be for some to gain access to healthcare. Initially, this observation caught me completely off-guard as prior to this experience, I had no real exposure to the side of medicine that is often ignored and rarely taught in school".

"My experience with the Crossroad Volunteer Internship Program (CVIP) has profoundly broadened my understanding of our healthcare system and the importance of patient-centered care. A conversation with a friend, who was already interning with CVIP, piqued my curiosity about the intricate aspects of healthcare insurance, challenges faced by underserved and rural communities, and the art of effective patient communication. With aspirations of becoming a healthcare professional, joining the CVIP seemed like a golden opportunity for me to learn more about healthcare. This internship offered more than just professional growth, it presented a chance to address and bridge the healthcare barriers that patients encounter. On my first day as a VIP, I felt overwhelmed by the myriad of procedures and regulations I was to be working with daily. Engaging in patient-centric volunteer work for the first time, I was apprehensive, especially when tasked with making my first call. I thought of various worst-case scenarios in my mind, imagining the guilt I would feel if I messed up. However, with each subsequent call, I steadily grew accustomed to the standard protocols, gradually overcoming my initial thoughts. What struck me most during my time as a CVIP was the intricate web of logistics woven into patient healthcare, many of which were previously unknown to me. This experience allowed me to witness the profound influence of social determinants on health outcomes, showcasing the systematic hurdles countless patients face. Witnessing firsthand the challenges that underserved patients deal with was an eye-opener. From financial constraints and transportation to language barriers, the obstacles were manifold. Furthermore, it does not help that patients have to wait months for appointments and long hours spent on phone calls to schedule a referral. With their already demanding schedule, many relied on us to ensure they had access to care. My journey as a CVIP has not just been a learning experience, but a reminder of the gaps that exist in our healthcare system and the urgent need for reforms that place patients at the heart of care."

"I first found out about the Crossroad Volunteer Internship program through a professor at my university. He sent out a post about it during the summer, and I applied later that week. Little did I know that this experience would shape my understanding of healthcare accessibility and reinforce my commitment to serving underserved communities.
As a VIP at Crossroad, my main role is to act as a referral specialist for patients at the clinic. My role is pivotal in connecting individuals from underserved communities with the healthcare services they need. Growing up as a minority in a predominantly white area, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by those who are underrepresented in accessing quality healthcare. This internship has provided me with a platform to address these disparities directly. Because of Crossroad, I have come to appreciate the importance of culturally competent care. Many individuals from underserved communities face barriers beyond just physical access to healthcare, including language barriers, cultural differences, and socioeconomic challenges. As a VIP, I strive to not only connect patients with healthcare services, but also to ensure that these services are tailored to meet their unique needs and circumstances.
One of the most impactful aspects of this internship has been the opportunity to shadow a doctor for the first time. Shadowing has allowed me to gain invaluable insights into the intricacies of medical practice and patient care. It has truly been a transformative experience to witness firsthand the dedication and compassion with which healthcare professionals serve their patients.

"I started as a VIP for Crossroad my sophomore year of college. Prior to my first rotation, I didn't have that great of an exposure to underserved communities. Talking to patients on the phone each shift greatly opened my eyes. In class, we always talk about the various social determinants of health, but actually interacting with people experiencing these determinants was completely different. Although we as VIP’s aren’t interacting with patients face-to-face, the gratitude coming from the patients is all the same over the phone. It truly is very fulfilling to be able to hear the relief in patient voices when they realize that they have people that care about their health and well being. That these same people are willing to help when it comes to receiving proper health care.
But, clarity wasn’t the only thing I gained from my time volunteering at Crossroad Health Center. My professional skills increased as my time spent at Crossroad increased. I found my adaptability and communication skills to have grown exponentially. Since no two referrals are the exact same, it is impossible to be able to completely predict how each phone call is going to go. Which forces you to be able to think fast on your feet and respond to situations in an appropriate manner. This in turn grew my adaptability and communication skills.
All in all, I have lots of gratitude for Crossroad Health Center. Without my time here I never would have gotten to interact and been made aware of how underserved communities experience so many social determinants of health. I also would not have the same level of professional skills as I do now without the VIP program at Crossroad Health Center. This program is truly amazing and I hope everyone gets a chance to take away something crucial from it like I did!"

"I applied to volunteer at Crossroad Health Clinic under slightly unorthodox circumstances. I had already graduated from the University of Cincinnati with my bachelor’s degrees and wasn't sure if graduates were allowed to join as VIP students. Thus, when I was accepted into the program it seemed like kismet. I would certainly encourage other alumni or older undergraduates to apply to this unique program as it has been such an enlightening and fulfilling experience for me.
Many pre-health students seek clinical volunteer hours in order to serve others in a field they are interested in and gain experience for their graduate school applications. I think it’s probably fair to say that hospital volunteering is the most popular route students take to accomplish this. Personally, I started volunteering at my local hospital in high school. I would never want to discourage students from volunteering in a hospital because I enjoyed that opportunity and gained exposure to the flow of different hospital departments. However, I have felt much more useful volunteering at Crossroad Health Center.
Additionally, I’ve been able to interact with more patients, more providers, and can accomplish tasks that facilitate healthcare access for people who need support. I always feel welcome and appreciated by staff and students alike at Crossroad Health Center, and it is a privilege to be able to serve my community alongside such passionate people who share my desire to mitigate the negative effects associated with social determinants of health.
Therefore, I am grateful for the opportunity to be a VIP as it’s a unique volunteer program with an exemplary mission of providing comprehensive and accessible healthcare. Even with ample resources the healthcare system, it is difficult to navigate. Many patients at Crossroad Health Center may lack access to essential resources such as transportation or technology. Others may not speak English or may not have insurance. By facilitating the scheduling process for referrals, VIP students such as myself are able to lessen the barriers to care faced by patients looking for assistance.
In addition to the satisfaction I feel when making appointments for patients who may otherwise never follow up on their referral, I have also learned a great deal. Through my time so far at Crossroad Health Center, I’ve uncovered some of the intricacies of this complicated system and I know this knowledge will make me a better provider one day".

"I first learned about Crossroad Health Center through my student mentor. She was a current intern and spoke highly of the volunteer intern program. She explained how the experiences she had in the program allowed her to be more prepared for her future career in healthcare. After researching Crossroad and the population they serve, I was drawn to the mission of Crossroad which is to care for the underserved communities in the Cincinnati area.
During my first rotation as a VIP, I learned about the barriers patients face when trying to schedule appointments with specialists. I had to step out of my comfort zone and learn how to manage insurance and scheduling conflicts with patients and medical offices. I also learned how to communicate effectively and professionally with patients and medical personnel. My first rotation allowed me to gain insight into the obstacles certain populations face when seeking medical care, in addition to developing my professional communication skills.
During my second rotation, I have had the opportunity to teach new VIPs how to interact with patients and medical staff through a leadership position. Additionally, I have taught the new interns how to use the various charting systems as well as help them become comfortable with the referral process. Working with new interns has been a rewarding experience because I have helped them gain confidence in their professional communications skills, as well as helped them learn how to handle difficult patient cases. I have also found that working with the new interns has helped develop my problem-solving skills, especially when facing scheduling challenges. Additionally, I know how to use the charting systems better as a result of teaching others.
Through my experiences at Crossroad Health Center, I have gained a greater perspective on the barriers people face when seeking healthcare. Being an intern has afforded me the opportunity to help patients overcome some of those challenges. My experiences have also helped me learn more about the administrative side of medicine, which is often overlooked when considering a career in medicine. Additionally, I know that my experiences at Crossroad have prepared me to better handle the challenges that I will face working in the medical field. I have become more empathetic towards patients as well as developed a passion for caring for those underserved communities".

"Beginning my journey as a VIP during my second year of college, my time so far at Crossroads has been transformative. It has provided me with a deeper understanding of the impact of social determinants of health and health disparities on our patient population. Simultaneously, my admiration for healthcare providers has grown, solidifying my dedication to the field.
The diverse and supportive community of providers at Crossroads plays a pivotal role in ensuring that members of our community have access to essential healthcare services. Through volunteering, I have gained a profound appreciation for the teamwork and collaboration required to address the complex needs of our patients.
My time at Crossroad has shed light on the significant barriers many patients face in accessing timely care. From enduring lengthy appointment wait times to grappling with transportation and insurance issues, the challenges are manifold. Observing these struggles has underscored the need for systemic change and emphasized the importance of community outreach initiatives Despite these obstacles, the positive interactions shared with patients have been incredibly rewarding. Even in my capacity as a volunteer, being able to alleviate some of their burdens and enhance their quality of life has been profoundly fulfilling. These moments serve as reminders of the essential role healthcare workers and volunteers play in serving their communities.
Reflecting on my experience at Crossroad, I am grateful for the invaluable skills I’ve gained. It has heightened my awareness of healthcare settings, reaffirmed the importance of community health initiatives, and underscored the necessity of addressing the needs of underserved individuals within our healthcare system. This transformative experience has reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career as a healthcare professional dedicated to aiding those in need.
Furthermore, my time at Crossroad has instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and resilience, qualities I believe are essential for navigating the complexities of healthcare. As I continue on my journey, I am inspired to advocate for equitable healthcare access and strive to make a difference in the lives of our communities".
