#theVIPexperience Post #98: Janvi Gandhi

Being a part of Crossroad Health Center has shaped me as a person. Reflecting at my experience volunteering here has been a journey of growth. Last year, after being chosen as a volunteer intern after a competitive application cycle and interview process, I started my journey at the CVIP.
My experience as a CVIP intern has been very different. While my first rotation was more like understanding how to conduct myself in a clinical setting and understand what my roles are, my second rotation was more like helping the new interns adapt to the program.
Shadowing doctors, medical assistants, and nurses during the first few weeks of joining the program gave me an idea of how things work in a clinic. Talking to patients, assisting doctors, and being a part of the patient-doctor interaction was an enriching experience. That made my belief to pursue medicine even stronger.
After that, I shadowed my site leader, Bijeta Pradhan, who helped me understand the different roles a CVIP intern has. I made mistakes a few times initially, but later I understood how the system works and made minimal errors.
Because of COVID-19, I am currently working off site. This has been a very different experience. I have learned how to multitask and work on referrals, scheduling appointments from home.
The best thing about volunteering at the crossroads is that we can serve people even from home. Along with that, I got to see the ‘behind the scenes’ of a clinic. Being a pre medical student, it is very important to get a holistic view before starting a journey in medicine and CVIP gives you that opportunity.
