#theVIPexperience Post #103: Lauren Schuermann

From a young age, my parents instilled in me the value of giving back to others. Annually, my family would volunteer at the soup kitchen on Thanksgiving and take a weekend to make blankets for the homeless and needy before Christmastime. I cherished this time, as I made bonding relationships with not only the members of my family, but also those in the communities we would help. Entering college, I knew I wanted to pursue a position in the healthcare field. After learning about Crossroad Health Center, I determined that this would be the perfect role for me.
In my time at Crossroads, I have gained invaluable experiences working with healthcare professionals and patients. Before the COVID pandemic, I collaborated closely with the physicians, nurses, and aids, who were always receptive to any questions I may have had. It was established early that those working had a common goal in bettering patient care and facilitating a team-like environment. Not only this, but as members of the volunteer internship program, we were able to contact and speak to patients every day. This has increased my problem-solving capabilities and has taught me how to interact professionally with those we service.
Volunteering at Crossroads has allowed me to imagine what a life in medicine may be like. It has shown me that this profession is difficult and may have its trials, but overall, it is rewarding and worth the effort. I plan to apply the knowledge that I have gained in my future endeavors of entering the medical field.
