#theVIPexperience Post #123: Ashley Durbin

I have enjoyed my time as a volunteer intern with Crossroad Health Center thus far. I have had the opportunity to be exposed to many different types of people with many different types of medical conditions. In some cases, I have been able to learn more about the medical conditions through conversations with the patients.

My most memorable experience while working with patients was over the phone. A woman was getting a procedure done for which she had been waiting years. After scheduling her appointment, I called her to inform her of her appointment details. When she picked up the phone, she began thanking me profusely and even started crying. After that experience, I realized that working as an intern does help many people.

This interaction with the woman helped to solidify my choice to pursue a career in medicine. As it showed me the impact that medicine can have on someone’s life. In addition to this, it also pushed me to become a COVID screener through Crossroad Health Center in order to gain more exposure to patients. This is something that is of great importance to me as it can be easy to forget the reason for dedicating one’s time to healthcare when there is no direct patient interaction.

Overall, the internship has helped me immensely with being able to work more within the medical field. It has also assisted me in pursuing my passion of spending my time volunteering in addition to helping me to learn more about medical terminology and procedures.
