I found out about Crossroad through an advertisement that was sent to my Spanish class looking for Spanish speaking VIPs. The program immediately interested me because it combined both my major in Health Sciences as well as my minor in Spanish. After looking into the program more, I found that many of my friends were already in the program and were enjoying it. Although I wasn’t sure what I was expecting when I applied to the program, I am glad I did because my time here at Crossroad has given me many valuable experiences.
Being VIP at Crossroad has given me a unique opportunity to interact with patients directly, whether it be over the phone or directly in the clinic. This is an experience that cannot be provided to me in my classes, and that has become increasingly more difficult to obtain during the pandemic, so I am incredibly grateful to have been accepted into this program. I have learned valuable patient communication skills that I will be able to carry with me and apply for the rest of my career as a healthcare professional.
Volunteering here has also allowed me to be exposed to a very diverse group of patients, each with different backgrounds and living situations. Working with such a wide variety of people has allowed me to be able to adapt to individual patient needs and individualize the way I interact with each patient so that they can feel as comfortable as welcome as possible. I believe that this is an extremely valuable skill to possess as a healthcare professional, as being able to tend to a patient’s individual needs and being mindful and respectful of their living situations is one of the best ways to optimize the care that a patient receives and can make their experience with the healthcare system much more pleasant.
I am extremely grateful for my time here at Crossroad; the skills, knowledge, and interactions that I have obtained from my time here have been very valuable, and I will carry them with me to become a better healthcare professional in the future.
