#theVIPexperience Post #172: Samir Siddiqui

One of the most reassuring phrases one can offer is “I’m only a phone call away.” This statement is reassurance that another person will be there for you in times of distress, turmoil, or even happiness. Having the ability to talk to someone over the phone can be the difference in achieving positive outcomes. My service through Crossroad has been everything I expected and more. I always knew that scheduling appointments and transportation for patients would be essential in being successful as an intern. However, the responses and reactions I get from patients have been so much more fulfilling than I could have imagined. The gratitude that patients express helps to motivate me to spend time in the clinic.

I have gained a greater appreciation for healthcare providers and teams who work with diverse populations on a day-to-day basis as they collaborate with the patient to achieve their goal: patient well-being. As a pre-medical student, I have witnessed the interaction between doctors and patients first-hand. A doctor once told me that success with a patient comes from having conversations and understanding where they come from. By talking to patients on the phone and hearing them explain their circumstances, it has given me insight into how conversation can be held with patients.

The biggest thing I have learned is how I can interact with several populations at the clinic and over the phone. It is important to gain these new perspectives on what obstacles people face when they need healthcare. Through conversation and observation, I have realized how our healthcare system has failed in supporting marginalized demographics. To all new VIPS, I would share this newfound knowledge and encourage them to use their time at Crossroad through calls, blog posts, and projects to address these downfalls. As students, there are many ways that we can contribute to the healthcare of all people. Simply providing accessible resources is the first step we can take; as Volunteer Interns, we are trusted with being active participants in the process of improving the lives of patients here.
