#theVIPexperience Post #107: Sachit Rustagi

Things are often not as simple as they may seem to the eye. As an aspiring medical professional, this is usually a relatively easy concept to grasp, as the diagnosis of various medical conditions cannot be done with the naked eye. However, through various discussions in my classes and in numerous extracurriculars, I became more interested in the effect of social and environmental factors on the health care outcome of any individual. I realized that it is important work towards healing patients beyond simply treating them, accounting for various logistical, financial, and emotional considerations in the care for patients.

I joined the volunteer intern position at the Crossroads Health Center with this in mind, hoping to better the lives of patients in the Cincinnati downtown and metro area through my work. With this position and the COVID-19 pandemic, my understanding of medicine and the necessity to adapt care to fit individual needs was tremendously increased. One of the most important lessons that I have learned is the intricacies of caring for communities, recognizing challenges that I may have never thought of before. With an upbringing in an affluent suburban neighborhood, I never really had to consider missing appointments due to a lack of transportation and financial accessibility. This changed through this internship, as I began to help combat some of the disparities present in healthcare. I also gained many insights into the practice of medicine, appreciating the ability to deliver health care as a team. Ultimately, I saw this position as an avenue to serve as an ally to the community, providing a space for members to share their perspectives and creating an environment of transparency and acceptance.
