I originally joined the Crossroad Health Center VIP program because I was looking to do more service in healthcare during the pandemic. I’ve certainly done a lot of service with this program, but I’ve learned so much as well. Organizations like CHC are important centers to support the public health of vulnerable populations. Through other experiences and classes, I’ve seen how frustrating and difficult the US healthcare system can be, but the comprehensive, nurturing, and affordable service CHC provides helps bridge these gaps.
When I joined the program, I was unsure of what my role was going to be, or what duties I had to perform. I now know that the services VIP’s provide help reduce some barriers to healthcare. Though we are only college students, we are able to directly help patients get the healthcare they need and deserve. It was great that I was able to address and assist breaking down some barriers such as transportation and time as a VIP. It was also amazing of CHC to develop a system that allowed volunteers to work during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially since barriers to healthcare are exacerbated in the vulnerable populations Crossroads serves.
I’ve also experienced some personal growth from my time volunteering here. I’ve certainly gotten a view on a side of healthcare I don’t usually pay attention to, which can only make me a better doctor in the future. I’ve also managed to develop professional presentation and communication skills due to my constant contact with patients during my shifts. Most importantly however, I’m grateful for being able to speak with patients as it has made me a more empathetic person. Working here has been an extremely fulfilling experience, since I legitimately feel like I’m helping people with every call I make.
