#theVIPexperience Post #147: Himanshu Kaushik

Starting out in the Crossroad Volunteer Internship Program (CVIP) virtually and now writing this in-person, I am highly grateful for my quality patient-assistance experiences. What keeps me coming in every week ready to help is the sheer satisfaction I receive for helping underprivileged patients get necessary care. The little “thank you” I receive at the end of each referral is a blessing as I have directly made a positive impact on the health of people around me. Although virtual volunteering was full of twists and turns as I wasn’t able to see the fruits of my work, coming in-person drilled in the purpose of my role to me. I am able to observe patients and health professionals around me dedicate their lives to helping others which I thoroughly enjoy being a part of.

Although some of the referrals can get tough if certain providers have no appointments or are out of the area for certain insurances, I always enjoyed pushing myself to the limit to try and get the issues solved. Additionally, I remember attempting to schedule an appointment with a patient using limited Spanish, and I was able to get through it. Through various experiences like these, I was able to delve deep into referral health care and learn even more about my resourceful self.

I have gained tremendous respect for all healthcare professionals because managing the

health of someone is an extremely highly moral condition that requires the utmost diligence. By volunteering, I have laid my first steps into my future career as a healthcare professional and hope to “break” into my steps even further.

Last but not least, I would tell incoming VIPs to truly think about the impact they are making and relish it as that is what keeps you going!
