#theVIPexperience Post #150: Rhianna Dunne

My experience as a CVIP at Crossroad has had a lot of navigating to go along with it because of when I decided to join. My first rotation was completely online, which had many challenges in and of itself when it came to questions during calls and issues regarding referrals, financial assistance, or transportation. However, through all these struggles it really showed me that the work we are doing is not “busy” work or work that does not carry an impact. My calls from my first rotation certainly began to show me that many patients are so grateful to receive the help and resources we offer. Even though there were occasional patients who did not seem to appreciate this, it still made it worthwhile hearing the patients who did with all of their heart. This rotation, I completely transitioned into in-person work and being a shift lead which was a huge shock honestly. I am growing to love it with every shift though. I feel so much more well equipped now that it is my second rotation and I am here in the clinic surrounded by other people to bounce questions off of. I feel a lot more competent in helping our patients which is the ultimate goal so it is very fulfilling every time I successfully schedule an appointment and/or transportation for those who need it. Especially being able to handle Spanish referrals has been wonderful because I feel so lucky to help break down the language barrier that faces so many patients in our community. I can only imagine how scary and frustrating it can be to try and get dire healthcare when providers cannot fully communicate with you as a patient. Crossroad has shown me how fulfilling and joyful it is to help and provide to your community. Also, Crossroad has become a little community in and of itself for me, filled with people who want to help and are  so kind to everyone around them.
