#theVIPexperience Post #163: Murphy Penwell

Coming to Crossroad Health Center post pandemic(for the most part) was such a relief and was a breathe of fresh air. I was excited to learn the needs of the community and make an impact on the people that Crossroad serves. When I came in for my first shift at OTR, I was greeted with an energetic shift lead who was willing to be patient and help me navigate the different programs that we use. Slowly but surely I became more comfortable using REDCap and Athena to help out patients. Crossroad has allowed me to connect with a wide range of patients from different backgrounds in our community, that I may not have been able to reach in my everyday life.

Being a VIP has taught me more about how the medical system works. UC Health and the other hospitals in the Cincinnati area have a wide range of specialty departments that I didn't  know existed. This further showed me the complexity of scheduling referrals alone without the help of a healthcare facility. This is where the joy comes in for me. When I call a patient and ask if they would like help scheduling, they are shocked and relieved at the same time because that is one less thing they have to worry about.

My advice to future VIPs is to take it as it comes. Learn and adapt as each referral comes in. Be patient, whether that is with a patient or sitting on hold for an hour(we have all been there). And have fun!!
