#theVIPexperience Post #165: Iyanna Bruce

I heard about Crossroads’ VIP program from a friend that was already involved. My friend told me so much about how being apart of this program has helped them so much not only for their future, but it helped changed their mindset of how all the roles in the healthcare system really contribute to each other.

For me it started off as curiosity. I wanted to know what made my friend so excited. I wanted to see how community played such a big role for this system. During my first rotation, I was so nervous. I couldn’t even make my first phone call! I was so worried that I wouldn’t know what to say or do once the person pick up. I was worried that the person on the other end would ask questions that I didn’t know that answer to. The list of my worries went on and on. With the help of my shift lead, I was finally able to make that call, and boy was it easy! It happened so easy and quick, lasting only a few minutes. The person on the other end was so grateful to me for my help. With the pattern down, my first rotation ended in a flash.

Now in my second rotation, I have learned so much. There are so many complex reflexes from different specialties. Not only that, but patients could deal with many referrals at one time and have issues getting an appointment for just one. I have begun to feel their frustrations and understand completely where they are coming from. A lot of times, I can’t handle all this pressure by myself, so I am so glad that we have such a tightknit team here at Crossroads. I can ask anyone for help, and they are always so willing to help me. I love this opportunity to work with others, to help ease the troubles of others, and to help better my community.
