#theVIPExperience Post #64: Fatima Khan

Perhaps it was her sudden grins that I caught glimpses of in the corner of my eye or her long, silky braids, but nevertheless this little girl was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful children I had ever seen. With her tall composure and serious glance, she completed her examination as if she had mastered the routine. "Would you like to go with my assistant to read some books outside", the nurse asked the little girl. And immediately, she had taken my hand and sat me down with her in front of the bookshelf. "Do you like reading", I asked. Nodding excitedly, she grabbed a book and began reading aloud, confidently enunciating her words. In pure awe I exclaimed, "you are the best reader I have ever met!" She looked at me with bright eyes and said, "I hope my reading is good because I want to be like the nurse in there one day." And in that moment I genuinely knew that this little girl could be anything that she put her mind to. I realized that it was because of girls like her that I had chosen healthcare as my own path. The potential that lies in the hands of children like her is inspiring and I hope that one day I can serve people like her because that would truly be an absolute honor. It is easy to forget why I want to be a doctor since the journey will be long and hard. But, she reminded me of why others are important to me and the power that health care has in making people's lives flourish.
