#theVIPexperience Post #143: Emaan Asghar

A lot of professionals have told me that the most rewarding part of their job in healthcare is seeing the benefit their patients gain. Hearing “thank you for your care” is their favorite part of the job. For me, my journey with Crossroad showed me how powerful a simple “thank you” really is.

Being on the phone for chunks at a time trying to schedule anything is stressful. But when it’s put on top of an already busy life, where a patient needs to juggle jobs, families, financial responsibilities, and other health concerns, finding time to make an appointment can become overwhelming. With numerous steps and boundaries, such as cost and even COVID, scheduling a referral can be difficult for patients.

I really learned how beneficial helping with referrals was when I, in my first rotation, was able to schedule an appointment for a patient who was having trouble finding a location, time and transportation that was suitable for their busy schedule. The patient was anxious about their health and wanted to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Their anxiety made me realize just how important this was to the patient and being able to schedule for them meant I could alleviate even just a bit of that fear.

When it was finally scheduled, the “thank you” I received was truly rewarding because I knew that the work I had done directly helped that patient. Since this, I have had so many valuable experiences being able to make the busy schedule of a patient just a little less stressful.
