#theVIPexperience Post #159: Ismael Reyes

When I first heard of the Crossroad VIP program, I thought it was a really great opportunity to learn some of the inner workings of a health center, but I never imagined just how much VIPs give back to the community. Part of being able to work for Crossroad is the sense that there are several healthcare barriers, and these are made clear in the interview process and beyond. What I didn’t know was just how prevalent the barriers we discuss are, and during my time at Crossroad I have gained a sense of how these barriers truly affect our patients. It might have been easy to question what the overall purpose of this program was, but now I know the importance of our role for patients, the providers, and Crossroad as a whole. Seeing the relief from providers after they ask for help with making appointments for their patients is fulfilling. The most valuable part of being at Crossroad has been being able to help the Spanish speaking community. They, on top of all other barriers, have the additional language and financial coverage barriers. These are some barriers that I experienced within my family, and it is incredibly rewarding being able to help other families like I helped mine. For any incoming VIPs, my advice would be to enjoy every referral as much as possible knowing that you will make a difference, and also to take and leave something from every
referral/experience with you. It may feel overwhelming at first, but with time you will build confidence and find that rewarding feeling of having helped someone!
