#theVIPexperience Post #160: Kaaviya Muruganantham

As a second rotation VIP, I continue to be inspired by the people I meet and things I learn every shift. While our job description is pretty self-explanatory, there is a mountain of nuance to every referral, call, and patient. Through my time here, I have observed that I am surprised when I am able to finish setting up a referral appointment without any hindrances. My surprise is due to the many barriers that can arise when scheduling appointments, anything from limited availability of the office or patient, long call/hold times, or lack of insurance/transportation. Of course, overtime setting up referrals have gotten easier as I am able to navigate some of the obstacles I normally encounter. But I am usually presented with one or two new things each shift that I have never had to deal with before. I am grateful for how dynamic this experience is because not only am I able to interact with patients, I have also become much more capable of communicating and adjusting the usual script as I go when I notice a referral not going to plan.

I have also learned about healthcare offices and the different fields of healthcare throughout my time as a VIP. The majority of our job is setting up referrals for patients and through that we learn of all the different specialists seeing patients and the different issues that might cause someone to go see a different doctor. As a pre-med student, this is an incredibly valuable opportunity as I get to learn from a clinical setting and see all the various specialties that patients get referred to. Crossroad has offered me a unique opportunity to learn about healthcare while also serving the community.
