#theVIPexperience Post #189: Shadi Omranian

"Crossroad has three sites, OTR, West, and Harrison. VIP or volunteer intern program is for undergraduate and graduate students. The required minimum commitment is 3 semesters. One has to call the patients, interact and learn more about their availability and any assistance that they may need. Later, VIPs have to call doctor's offices or transportation centers to set a time with the patient's availability. As a Crossroad health center volunteer and intern, I learned so many skills that will help me throughout the future. I have learned how to talk to patients, call doctors' offices and make appointments. I used many different tools and websites such as Athena, RedCap and etc... In the past 3 semesters, I have learned so many skills and social aspects. After COVID, we all forgot how to socialize. This was a great experience. When not knowing an answer, we had to email the team or the site lead. This also taught us not to be scared to ask questions. We also have to learn about HIPAA and if each patient wants folks to leave a voice message with their appointment or not. This is an essential skill to learn as a healthcare professional. I personally also learned how to send a letter professional, make notes in patient charts and also send a fax.

For more information and assistance, one can send their questions and concerns and they can get answers in the big group meetings that are bimonthly."
