#theVIPexperience Post #188: Sajida Maouloud

"When I first heard about the Crossroad Volunteer Internship. I know I wanted to be part of it. And I know I will like it. I was so excited about the opportunity to have any sort of communication with patients. Even though I was nervous at the same time about my first day because I didn't know exactly what it would be like. But I was overwhelmed the first minute of the first meeting with how everyone was trying to make it easy for the new interns and how everyone was there for the rest. I know they love what they are doing and so they are doing it right. I think as students we all heard and learned about all the barriers to healthcare that underserved patients experience but as VIPs at Crossroad, we were able to witness it and witness their real effects. Unlike other hospitals and health facilities I have been too, Crossroad focuses on those barriers and works to eliminate them. And what makes me like being a VIP at Crossroad is that I can help in the process of eliminating those barriers for patients even in a small way. And am so proud of all the impact the VIPs are making. With all that being said, being a VIP at Crossroad was different for me than any other internship I have had. It's a lot for me then just healthcare experience. It had an impact on my life on the personal level. I was always one of the last-minute people because I always tried to do more than I can do at the same time. When I applied for the internship with Crossroad, I was a full-time student working a full-time job, holding another two volunteer positions, and doing 24h research a week with other different positions. But being a VIP at Crossroad was the "aha moment" in my life the moment that changed the way I look at stuff. Being able to schedule appointments for patients on time when I used to be always late to schedule my own appointments. And calling them a week before and day before their appointment to remind them of their appointment time and details to make sure they make it to it. As well as help scheduling transportation for them if they needed to. And do my best to make sure everything they need is ready for them. Just has been a game changer in me as a person."
