#theVIPexperience Post #68: Urjasvi Patel

The first time I came across the exciting opportunity of participating in the VIP program at Crossroad was through the newsletter of Pre-Professional Advising Center of UC. I had no idea what this program was all about, but I knew I wanted to be a part of this important cause. I have always loved helping people and this program allowed me to do exactly what I loved. I was nervous on my first day. I did not know what to do. I did not want to go wrong with anything or provide the patients with incomplete information because I knew how important our work was for these patients. I had no experience of interacting with patients until I started working as a VIP and being focused on a goal of getting a career in medicine, I knew this was going to be a great asset to my skills. I was able to enhance my communication skills which was the most important aspect I wished to gain from this program. Now when I have completed my first rotation, I definitely have more knowledge of the healthcare field and the patients’ needs than before. I thoroughly enjoy coming here and simply knowing how grateful the patients are. I now understand that our help to the patients is nothing as compared to the barriers faced by them. It is very shocking to know that a patient would not choose to seek care only because they do not have insurance. There is need for awareness for an equal access of healthcare to all and I greatly appreciate the effort Crossroad puts in towards this awareness. And I am very happy to be able to contribute to this effort. I cannot wait to learn something new each time I come here and spend time with the wonderful team of Crossroad and my fellow VIPs.
