#theVIPexperience Post #204: Isabella Roscoe

"I first learned about Crossroad Health Center through my student mentor. She was a current intern and spoke highly of the volunteer intern program. She explained how the experiences she had in the program allowed her to be more prepared for her future career in healthcare. After researching Crossroad and the population they serve, I was drawn to the mission of Crossroad which is to care for the underserved communities in the Cincinnati area.

During my first rotation as a VIP, I learned about the barriers patients face when trying to schedule appointments with specialists. I had to step out of my comfort zone and learn how to manage insurance and scheduling conflicts with patients and medical offices. I also learned how to communicate effectively and professionally with patients and medical personnel. My first rotation allowed me to gain insight into the obstacles certain populations face when seeking medical care, in addition to developing my professional communication skills.

During my second rotation, I have had the opportunity to teach new VIPs how to interact with patients and medical staff through a leadership position. Additionally, I have taught the new interns how to use the various charting systems as well as help them become comfortable with the referral process. Working with new interns has been a rewarding experience because I have helped them gain confidence in their professional communications skills, as well as helped them learn how to handle difficult patient cases. I have also found that working with the new interns has helped develop my problem-solving skills, especially when facing scheduling challenges. Additionally, I know how to use the charting systems better as a result of teaching others.

Through my experiences at Crossroad Health Center, I have gained a greater perspective on the barriers people face when seeking healthcare. Being an intern has afforded me the opportunity to help patients overcome some of those challenges. My experiences have also helped me learn more about the administrative side of medicine, which is often overlooked when considering a career in medicine.                 Additionally, I know that my experiences at Crossroad have prepared me to better handle the challenges that I will face working in the medical field. I have become more empathetic towards patients as well as developed a passion for caring for those underserved communities".
